The division between ‘North’ and ‘South’ in the digital information age

We say ‘nowadays everyone uses the Internet’, ‘everyone is on Facebook’. We tend to generalize everything when it comes to the Internet. Not many people though consider the division between the North and the South, and do not consider the small number of people that actually use the Internet in the Southern hemisphere. The gap between the two hemispheres seems to be rather big.

Europe, North America and Asia account for the 92% of the International telecoms traffic whereas a large part of the world’s population has never made a phone call!! information on that can be found on Neilsen Netratings, www.netratings.com

It seems that the South is left behind in the communications revolution and globalisation develops in the North western parts of this world. We should therefore be more critical when we use the words ‘global’ and ‘worldwide’ as a very large part of the population world that is not involved in it due to socioeconomic factors.

  1. True, but if you think for a moment which countries are located in the southern hemisphere, it makes sense! I mean, think about nearly all of the continent of Africa, or Indonesia. It seems that the remaining 8% is shared between Australia & Brazil!

  2. We’re all talking about globalization, its pros and cons but 3rd world countries aren’t really included in this notion. It’s mostly about the countries that have certain standards and can cope with global updates in different sectors.

  3. Well known, interesting nonetheless. And way better than your first two. It was about time you got more political and expressed some opinion here. Keep up!

BTW, sushiperv, Brazil? What are you talking about? Are you referring to the stunning 1% that actually OWNS a pc there?

  4. loumidis: which part of “shared between” u didn’t understand? There is another country up there in my comment, except Brazil, that starts with an A. I’m sure you can find it.

  5. regarding the article, while it is very interesting, i would also like to add the fact that different countries have chosen to support in a way the process of this division, for example Saudi Arabia, in particular a friend of mine who is from there told me that the use of computers by the government first occured a year ago after pressure from other countries who suggested it due to the ease it offered in various matters, while this was chosen by the government, the people of saudi arabia are against this exclusion of the globalization process
